Applelust is looking to add writers to its staff. If you are interested or want to be part of the Applelust community, drop us a line with your resume or vita. We are always on the look out for good, very smart, and reliable people to join the staff. If you think you have what it takes, let us know.

Amen Corner

  • Intellectual masturbation on writing well: So, you think you're a writer, eh? (8-24-01). Rodney O. Lain. Rodney gives some guidelines for good writing, or steps to becoming a good writer.
  • The "life of the mind"— for the rest of us (7-13-01). Implicitly or explicitly stated, metacognition (“thinking about thinking,” “thinking about knowing”) has been a common thread throughout Applelust’s mission, vision and editorial stance since its inception. We like to have writers whose writing sometimes addresses various aspects of this notion, implicitly or explicitly. Our newest columnist, Rodney O. Lain, does so in his maiden foray under the “Amen Corner” masthead.

I don’t wanna be a poet.
Cuz I don’t wanna blow it.
I don’t care to win awards.

All I wanna do is dance,
And play music, sex romance.
Try my best to never get bored.
            (Prince, from album “1999”)

Rodney O. Lain wants to make you mad. He wants to make you laugh. He wants to make you think. He wants to make you forget. But most importantly, he wants to make you read. And he has come to Applelust through an arduous, curious and circuitous route to do just that.

Well known on the Mac Web for an uncompromising writing style that unabashedly segues from wit to pathos to downright controversy, Rodney has written regular — and irregular — columns for a veritable slew of Mac web sites over the last few years: "The Angry Mac Man,” at TheiMac.com; "The Realist," at MyMac.com; "The Iconoclast" at the now-defunct MacSimple.com; and a few others for local newspapers and other Mac web sites.

Most recently, he wrote the "Mac Spirit" column at Applelinks.com, before readers, advertisers and the Speech Police demanded that he be fired for using the word "nigger" in a column.

His most popular writing appeared at MacAddict.com under the "iBrotha" moniker, until the first wave of dot-com shake outs earned him a pink slip. "iBrotha" now resides at MacObserver.com. He also writes "Things Macintosh" at LowEndMac.com, and writes at other sites, where he is allowed to say things like “nigger, nigger, nigger, nigger, nigger!” to his heart's content.

Rodney lives in Minnesota, where he is an MIS manager for a pretty big Fortune 50 company. Sketchy biographical and personal interests are deliberately scattered throughout his web site at http://www.ibrotha.com. He won't tell you anything more definite, because he thinks you are all just jealous and are out to get him.

He swears that he isn’t paranoid, though.
